Washington DC - Joe diGenova, Washington's pick to oversee a vast conspiracy investigation into President Donald Trump's political foes, has stepped aside following clashes with the Department of Justice.

Prior to his resignation on Thursday, diGenova headed a south Florida-based probe that was meant to investigation so-called conspiracies against Trump and pursue legal charges against the president's enemies.

In particular, the probe is looking into crimes it alleges occurred during investigations into Trump, such as the 2016 Russian election interference inquiry and charges filed against the president in the aftermath of the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021.

The probe is behind numerous legal attacks pursued by the DOJ against government officials who participated in investigations into Trump – notably, cases against former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey.

DiGenova is a former US Attorney for Washington DC. He represented Trump in one of the DOJ probes that he was then charged with investigating.

According to sources, diGenova – who only entered the role in April after the ouster of Maria Meditis Long – was asked to leave after clashing with top DOJ officials and losing the confidence of his superiors.

"It was an honor and privilege to serve the president and the department," diGenova told CNN on Thursday. "As an old prosecutor of more than 50 years, I make cases the old fashioned way: Witnesses, evidence, etc. That takes time."

Two people familiar with diGenova's work told CNN that investigators working under diGenova are relieved he has left because he provided a lack of leadership, confused strategies, and poor organization.

"Joe came in pretty hot. He had a lot of things he wanted to look into," one source said. "He was missing the forest for the trees."
