Mammoth Lakes, California - Jake Whisenant, a climber who holds the record for the fastest ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, has died at just 30 years old.

As the New York Post reported, the climber was involved in an accident on August 3 in the Sierra Nevada, based on court documents from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office.

The exact cause of Whisenant's death remains unclear.

Bailee Moore, a longtime friend of the climber, posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing, "It is with an impossibly heavy heart that I share the passing of my lifelong friend and confidant – Jacob Daniel Whisenant."

"Our family is absolutely devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves in the beautiful Sierra Nevada," Moore added.

Instagram users flooded the comments sections with expressions of sympathy.

"My heart breaks for you. Jake was such a light in this world," one user commented.

Whisenant made a name for himself in the climbing world in 2024 when he tackled the Lurking Fear route on El Capitan in record time. In just two hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds, he set a new speed record for the climb.

Jake also turned heads when he completed The Nose route on El Capitan – not once, but twice in a single day. As TMZ reported, the feat took over 14 hours and required immense stamina.
