Clovis, California - Olympic champion Alysia Liu announced that she will not be competing in this upcoming figure skating season. This news comes after she recently came out of early retirement.

"While people are announcing programs, imma take this time to announce that I will not be competing this season," the 21‑year‑old wrote in an Instagram post.

"I always want to challenge myself in new ways, so my artistry & skating can evolve. It’s important to me that my sport reflects my personal growth. I'm gonna take the time to recalibrate, fine-tune things & whatnot," Liu explained.

The athlete assured her supporters that she would return soon, however.

"Fear not, I'll be back, & in the meantime I’ll be rooting for my teammates near & far," she said.

The skater previously announced her retirement at the age of 16 after the 2022 Olympics in Beijing due to wanting to spend more time with her loved ones out of the spotlight. She returned to skating in 2024.

Liu returned for the 2024/25 season and competed in the Olympic Winter Games in Milan, where she became the first American women's figure skater since 2002 to win an individual gold medal.

In March, Liu was honored in Oakland with a rally after the games where she declared her love for her hometown.
