Missouri voters reject proposal to ban abortion: "Politicians tried to pull a dirty trick"

Jefferson City, Missouri – Missouri voters have rejected a proposal to ban abortion, reaffirming the public's 2024 vote which lifted one of the strictest abortion bans in the country.

Missouri's Amendment 3 failed, with over 55% of the vote, according to the Associated Press.

The election marked a resounding defeat for the Republican-led legislature's proposal to ban abortion, except in cases of rape and incest for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy or longer for fetal anomalies.

This result is a major victory for the state's abortion rights supporters.

"Politicians tried to pull a dirty trick to overturn the will of their voters and reinstate an extreme abortion ban, but Missourians saw through their scheme and resoundingly REJECTED it," the Center for Reproductive Rights wrote on social media following the AP's call.

"Just two years ago, Missouri voters enshrined reproductive rights into their constitution. This second win is a resounding rebuke of anti-abortion misinformation and extremism."

In 2024, Missouri voters chose to lift the state's near-total abortion ban, which went into effect following the 2022 fall of Roe v. Wade.

Missouri voters' rejection of Amendment 3 also shows voter support for transgender rights. After losing the 2024 vote, abortion opponents coupled their proposed abortion prohibition with a ban on puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and gender-affirming surgery for minors.

In the run-up to Tuesday's vote, ads from abortion opponents focused on the ban on gender-affirming care as opposed to the abortion ban, which reproductive rights proponents described as an attempt at misdirection.

That's not the only proposal Missouri voters rejected in the 2026 midterms. They also said no to Proposition A, a 2025 state redistricting plan that benefited Republicans.
