Butterfly is almost grounded for good by pot of beans: "You really can't make this stuff up"

Smithtown, New York – Beans are not cool if you're a Monarch butterfly! One beautiful bug couldn't fly after getting stuck in a pot of legumes. Luckily, the guy who found it tried to help, but when the insect didn't recover, he brought the Monarch to the professionals at Sweetbriar Nature Center in Long Island's Smithtown.

This orange and black Monarch found itself in a sticky situation when it landed in a pot of beans, per Sweetbriar Nature Center's Instagram video post.

With beans on its wings, this bug couldn't fly.

The young man who discovered the bug in his pot did his best to help.

While cradling the insect, he described his rescue efforts: "We cleaned her up, gave her an orange."

When the insect still couldn't fly in the morning, he turned to the professionals.

"It's not often that we are called upon to rehabilitate a butterfly," Sweetbriar Nature Center's Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation, Janine Bendicksen, told Popular Science.

"Most butterflies have relatively short lifespans, but when we receive a monarch in the fall – especially one that will travel thousands of miles on its migration to Mexico – we do everything we can to give it the best possible chance."

"Butterflies are incredibly delicate, and even handling them can cause additional damage or leave them unable to fly,” Bendicksen added.

As their Insta video shows, rehabilitators sprayed the bug with water to get the bean residue off.

Sadly, even after it dried, the oily stuff was still stuck, so they tried something else: They dabbed the pretty bug with cornstarch.

"And suddenly… he flew," the rescuers beamed in their post.

"We brought him outside, opened our hands, and watched this little monarch take to the skies."

Thanks to help, a bath in some beans won't keep this bug from soaring high. Wildlife rehabilitators used cornstarch to save this grounded butterfly.

The Sweetbriar Nature Center concluded its post by saying, "A very strange beginning to a very happy ending. You really can't make this stuff up."
