Virgil Wiebe was recently traveling through Chicago but didn't make his connecting flight.

So, he decided to take a smoke break in the meantime – a decision that would change his life.

While Wiebe was smoking in front of Terminal 1, a tiny orange kitten suddenly appeared, as NBC Chicago reported.

He said, "He sort of appeared out of nowhere. I already missed one flight, and I figured, well, I might be missing another one."

The four‑legged newcomer, estimated to be only about three weeks old, was wandering the airport grounds with no sign of his mother.

Wiebe searched the surrounding bushes for any other cats, but found none. So he didn't waste any time: Wieby scooped the little animal into his arms and headed back to the terminal to see if anyone could help him take the kitten home.

"The TSA agent had no idea what to do, said they'd never seen a stray at the airport. They tried to be helpful, said, 'You're gonna need a kennel,'" Wiebe recalled.

Since his next flight was already boarding, he didn't have much time to get a crate.

Then, an idea struck: Rather than leaving, he quickly ordered a transport carrier and cat milk through DoorDash and had them delivered straight to the airport.

United Airlines staff even helped him add the kitten to his reservation so the two could travel home together.

Wiebe had to pay $150 for his new little companion. Afterwards, the cat was allowed to board the plane with his new family member.

One thing was still missing: a name!

And Wiebe came up with something special. He named the kitten Macanudo O'Hare – a blend of the cigar he smoked when they first met and the airport where they crossed paths.

For everyday use, the little cat got a shorter, easier‑to‑pronounce name: Harry!

How the kitten, only a few weeks old, ended up at the airport and how long he had been on his own before that remains unclear.

"He's just a joyful little thing, and it's so coincidental how it all happened. Who knows where Harry came from, but now he's ours."
