On August 13, Grissom and their 5‑year‑old dog Carl visited a friend’s farm in Charlotte, Tennessee, as reported by the Washington Post.

The dog knew the area well, so Carl was usually allowed to roam freely there with his four-legged friends.

However, late in the afternoon, Grissom’s group drove to a viewpoint above a roughly 196-foot-high cliff. When the men set off again shortly afterward, Carl had vanished without a trace. Then they suddenly heard his bark somewhere below the ledge!

The group searched for the dog for hours, but the echo off the rocks made it almost impossible to pinpoint his location.

A neighbor and his son eventually arrived with a drone and kept searching deep into the night.

It wasn’t until the first morning light that the breakthrough came: the drone spotted Carl about 100 feet below the lookout point. The dog was perched on a rock ledge barely larger than his own body.

Right next to it was a small cave where he had apparently taken shelter during the night.

By now Carl had been trapped for many hours. His rescuers called the fire department, and crews from four local fire stations arrived with climbing gear.

Firefighter Ben Mayberry rappelled down the cliff face together with rescuer Nathan Ramos. When they reached Carl, the dog looked exhausted and frightened.

For the hazardous journey back, the rescuers resorted to an unusual solution. They placed Carl in a large travel bag provided by a spectator.

After about 20 minutes, it was done. And after spending roughly 17 hours on a cliff, Carl was safely back on track. Afterwards, he took his dog to a veterinary clinic just to be safe.

The good news: Carl was thirsty and exhausted, but only suffered minor injuries. Within a few days, he was running around again, chasing after balls like a good boy does!
