Dog refuses to leave injured friend's side, leading rescuers to make a bittersweet decision
Odesa, Ukraine - They were old, and one of them was badly injured on his hind legs. Yet – or perhaps because of that – the two dogs were abandoned at a gas station in Ukraine. Fortunately, the staff there notified Love Furry Friends in Odessa, and employees soon came to the rescue to save the two furry friends from their sad situation.
The team released a YouTube video that shows the story of the two four‑legged friends. According to it, the two dogs were fed by the gas station staff.
However, none of them had the capacity to provide the animals with a roof over their heads.
As a result, the black‑furred dog, whose injured hind legs were barely usable, and his companion had to fend for themselves outside.
Nevertheless, the healthier dog never left his furry friend's side. The two stuck together. Eventually, an animal‑rights activist from Love Furry Friends built trust with the pair.
Before long, they were ready to come with her. At the shelter, Love Furry Friends veteran Olena cared for the two old canines. Shortly after, a sad piece of news came to light.
Senior dogs will now live at the shelter
It turned out that both dogs were suffering from heartworms, and their hearts were already damaged.
As a result, they will need lifelong treatment for heartworms.
"Finding a family for both seniors is almost impossible," Love Furry Friends wrote in the subtitles of their video.
Consequently, the team made a bittersweet decision: Since they didn't want the dog friends to be separated, they decided to keep both of them in the shelter for the rest of their lives.
"We won't make them lose each other," the team said. The two senior dogs can now look forward to a period of life where they'll finally receive proper care.
