Romeo, Michigan – The homeward trip of a young student took an unexpected turn when he spotted a tiny bundle of fur by the roadside. Thinking it was an abandoned puppy, the boy took the animal in and brought it to the nearest veterinarian. There, he was met with a shock.

Little Levi didn’t hesitate for a second to rush to the animal’s aid last May and bring it home.

From there, he and his concerned family took it to a veterinary clinic.

The vet, however, first had to inform the rescuers that the "puppy" wasn’t a dog at all, but a coyote pup.

It still needed medical treatment: the wild animal had a broken leg.

After receiving the necessary care, the four‑legged patient was taken to a shelter run by the Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) in Romeo, where it was named "Kojo."

Kojo recovered quickly from his broken leg and settled in well at the rehab facility.

Even integrating into a small pack went smoothly.

"He is being raised with two other wild coyotes, and they will all be released [in] another month or so," Kelley LaBonty of DAWG told The Dodo.

Although Levi and his family already saved Kojo’s life, they wanted to do even more for the wild animal.

"The family was so thankful that they designated DAWG as the honoree for their son Levi’s bar mitzvah gifts," LaBonty explained.

"We were all blessed by baby Kojo and thankful he received care and can return to the wild," the rescuer added.
