Morbidly obese stray dog goes viral for touching weight loss journey: "People were literally killing her with kindness"
Thailand – Street dogs lead a hard life and are often undernourished because they can’t find food every day. But that doesn’t happen to be the case for a stray named Bella.
When Happy Doggo rescuers saw the female dog from Thailand, they could hardly believe their eyes.
"People were literally killing her with kindness," reads the onscreen text of the animal rescue team's viral Instagram post.
They add more context in their caption, writing, "Bella is a well-loved community dog, but the endless street food from well-meaning tourists brought her to a dangerous 42.2 kg."
This translates to about 92 lbs.
The post includes a video that shows just how overweight Bella has become.
In some scenes of the viral clip, the furry friend can barely get up without assistance.
"People thought they were showing love, but they were actually putting her health in serious risk. Her body was under so much stress she could barely move," her rescuers said.
Fortunately, animal rights activists took Bella under their wing as soon as they rescued her from the street. To speed up her weight loss, they relied on more than just a diet change, however.
How has Bella the dog's weight loss journey progressed?
In the video, the chonky dog still has to be partially dragged at times.
Eventually, however, Bella is encouraged to move in a swimming pool, where she makes progress in small steps.
"We've made it our mission to turn things around safely. With a strict diet, tailored exercise, and hydrotherapy to protect her joints, she's taking her first steps toward a healthier life," the animal carers said.
As a result, the four‑legged friend has already shed three kilograms (about 7 lbs) after just one week, the team reports.
A breakthrough can’t be claimed after such a short period, but Bella seems to sense that she needs to keep at it.
"There's still a long road ahead, but we're so proud of her determination," the team said at the end of their post. "Go Bella!"
