Strange puppies baffle shelter workers: "What in the world are these guys?"
Sacramento, California – Sacramento shelter workers are still shaking their heads over a strange litter of baby dogs. These puppies' looks have everyone confused. What breeds could produce puppies with big ears and wiry beards?
When seven clean and healthy puppies were discovered at a Sacramento recycling center, rescuers assumed the little dogs had been dumped.
But once Sacramento SPCA workers got the fur babies settled at the shelter, they took a closer look and were baffled.
These doggos looked downright strange!
All the puppies had large, very pointed, upright ears, but apart from that they weren't similar at all.
Some had sleek and smooth coats while others were wiry. One puppy even had two different colored eyes.
"I myself did a double take while doing a live shelter tour and thought... 'What in the world are these guys?'" Sarah Varanini, communications manager at the Sacramento SPCA, told The Dodo.
Varanini said everyone kept asking each other if they'd seen the "strange-looking litter of puppies."
No one knows what dog breed these puppies are!
Sacramento SPCA's communications manager said that everyone has a different idea about the puppies' breed.
When the shelter shared a photo of the pups on Facebook, social media users couldn't agree on a dog breed, but did think the pups were super cute.
Varanini said, "The general consensus is that they look like the dogs from the Wes Anderson movie, Isle of Dogs."
"Staff guesses included Malinois mixes, 'terrier' mixes, Schnauzer mixes, pittie mixes, dingo mixes (jokingly, of course!), and even some sort of doodle, as we have seen DNA tests come back on scruffy mixes actually having poodle in them," she added.
Currently, the puppies' true heritage is a mystery, as the shelter didn't do any DNA testing.
That may not be the case for long, though, as one pup's adoptive family has already sent off some samples and is awaiting results.
