Puerto Rico – He originally only wanted to grab a quick burger, but as Sam stood in the parking lot of a McDonald's, a stray dog caught his eye. What happened next is melting hearts across the Internet.
The self-proclaimed adventurer watched the canine desperately wandering in the rain.
"There was a blonde dog walking between the cars, clearly looking for something to eat. When he came up to my truck, I opened the door and put a hamburger on the ground for him, while still trying to keep him dry with an umbrella," Sam wrote in a post on Instagram.
But what the dog did next shocked Sam! While trying to coerce the dog toward the burger, the pup had other plans in mind.
"He completely ignored the hamburger and jumped straight into my truck," he wrote. “I hadn’t planned on him getting into my vehicle… but at that moment I didn’t want to send him back out into the rain.
Once the dog was inside, he laid his head down to take a nap, and it was then that Sam said he "knew there was no way I was going to put him back out on the streets, especially in that downpour. So I brought him home."
After a bath and a clean bill of health from the vet, Sam vowed to try to help get him back on his feet, but the stars aligned slightly differently.
"Somewhere along the way, this incredibly gentle dog went from being a stray I found in the rain to being a part of my everyday life. He’s stolen my couch, my camera roll, and my heart," Sam wrote. Awwww!
Though Sam said the dog was "still getting used to life indoors," he's happy to report that the pup – whom he named Gus – is "safe, loved, and has someone looking out for him."
