Jurupa Valley, California – Sully the dog looked truly dreadful when he was rescued from the streets in California earlier this year, clad in a ridiculous amount of fur. His coat was extremely matted, and it had grown over his eyes so much that the poor dog could barely see anything. But his transformative haircut has us believing you really can't judge a book by its cover!

“When Sully arrived, he was matted, dirty, and unable to see due to the 3 pounds of matted fur he was carrying. This sweet boy was wandering the streets alone for who knows how long before Riverside’s Animal Control Officer gained his trust and was able to bring him to safety,” Adam Lamb, the CEO of Brandywine Valley SPCA, told People.

The California team had to shave nearly 3 pounds of fur off the male dog at the beginning of the year. After that, a completely different dog emerged.

On Facebook, Sully's rescuers documented his "transformation" in a video, in which the four-legged friend finally walks, relieved, onto the shelter’s yard.

"You can see the relief Sully felt in the videos of him on grooming day," Lamb said.

But once the fur was shaved, Sully changed dramatically.

"You can really see in the photos and video of Sully just how weighed down he was when he first came into the Southern California shelter. He must have been so uncomfortable, hot, itchy, and smelly. Once that weight was lifted, he showed everyone his sweet, friendly, happy self and brought his infectious smile and spirit everywhere he goes,” Lamb told People.

Because the shelter in California was so overcrowded, the furry friend had to be flown, along with dozens of other dogs, to another state. Sully now lives in New Jersey.

However, he is still waiting there for a final happy ending.

"Sully is a goofy, playful guy who can get the silliest zoomies when running through the yards. He is a smart pup who is very treat-motivated to learn and already knows some basic commands like sit. Sully is a pro at walking on a leash and has great manners with all the new people he meets,” Lamb said of Sully’s uniquely wonderful qualities.
