Heavyweight champs! Meet the Marmots competing in the first-ever Fat Marmot Week
Gothic, Colorado – Which Yellow-bellied Marmot has become the most massive? The first-ever Fat Marmot Week kicks off in a few days. It's time to meet the animals competing for the inaugural crown: here is your rotund rodent roundup.
Researchers at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) launched Fat Marmot Week to celebrate how massive marmots must get to survive their long winter hibernation.
Like the contest that inspired it – the beloved Fat Bear Week – Fat Marmot Week is a single-elimination tournament in which the public gets to vote on the contestant they think best packed on the pounds.
Marmot voting madness begins August 24 and runs until August 29 on the contest website.
After the votes are tallied, the winners will be crowned.
In addition to the public vote, researchers will also be announcing which marmot is the actual fattest marmot of them all.
Though not all the contestants may be eligible for the second possible crown, as some of the marmots refused to weigh in.
The marmots battling up for the crown bear the monikers: dans_hat, Citroën, Open kite, Dawn, Stonehenge, 1, Dandelion, and G.
The main marmots of the moment
Each of the eight contestants has a real personality and a role within their colony.
Marmot lady dans_hat is a "cool aunt" whose plans for helping with her colony's pups didn't pan out.
"She didn’t breed this year and was hoping to be an aunt until a badger ate all of her nieces and nephews," per her bio on the contest website.
Citroën, a new marmot in RMBL, was first spotted in May and has taken up with another fellow contestant, Open kite. He's keen on playing the devoted step-dad.
Researchers call Open kite the "girl boss who runs the RMBL townsite."
This year, Open kite has been focused on her own mass because she's pup-free this season. There's an excellent pic of her bulk in her Instagram intro.
One of the other three males in the running for the chubbiest of them all is Dawn. This male marmot has fathered many litters over the years and likes to keep watch while his pups play. This strange daddy also apparently "enjoys the taste of rocks."
Another matriarch competing for the title is "big mama and the queen of the Bench colony matriline," Stonehenge. This marmot lady had a litter, but lost it to a hungry badger. 50% of marmot pups don't make it past the first year, according to researchers.
A marmot named 1 is also on the ballot; this "proud mama" is "extremely watchful of her babies" and likes to landscape and decorate the burrow she shares with another mother, who isn't competing and is named 2.
Researchers described the seventh contender, Dandelion, as a "shy queen." This mama marmot has six pups and likes to bask in the sun on her favorite rock.
Last but not least is G, which, per his bio, is short for "Goblin." Researchers report that this fast guy will fight anyone who messes with his ladies. Goblin has "a need for speed and no time for walking." G's got enough spunk to round off the inaugural Fat Marmot Week competition.
Every marmot has done a great job of packing it on, as the pictures in their bio show. For example, a pic of Dawn that shows him looking like a large furry log. These are the marmot beauty standards, people!
Before you cast your votes, take some time to look at these cute critters and learn about them on the contest website.
Voting begins Monday, so make sure that you're ready. May the most massive marmot win!
