Mother and daughter killed in horrific bear attack while hiking in Canada
Bella Coola, Canada – It was supposed to be an ordinary walk in Canada, but for mother‑daughter duo Jennifer Balcarras and Selah Reed, it ended in tragedy.
As Canada News reported, 48-year-old Balcarras and her 20-year-old daughter were on the Snooka West Trail in Bella Coola on Saturday.
When the two failed to return, their family reported them missing on Sunday.
Early investigation results suggest the women fell victim to a bear attack.
On Monday, Balcarras' body was first found on the trail. Emergency crews then discovered the remains of her daughter on Tuesday afternoon during a search of the area.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to cover funeral costs for the mother and daughter. So far, more than $23,000 been raised.
Conservation officers are searching for the bear involved
The fundraising appeal says, "Selah was just 20 years old, with her whole life ahead of her. She was only beginning her journey into adulthood, making this loss even more heartbreaking."
"Jenny leaves behind three young adult children – a son and two daughters – as well as a grandchild," it continues.
"They are now faced with the devastating loss of their mother and sister while also having to navigate the unexpected financial burden of arranging funeral services and covering the associated expenses for both Jenny and Selah."
Currently, bears in the area are being captured and examined.
If an animal is definitively identified as the perpetrator of the fatal attack, it is reported that it will be killed to protect public safety.
The public is again strongly urged to avoid the affected area.
