Connecticut – There are some noises homeowners would rather not hear – and a mysterious scratching is definitely one of them. These unnerving noises led a Connecticut family on a wild search, where they discovered a trapped animal!

When Alanna Fox returned home after a weekend away, she knew something was off. "I noticed that my cat was spending more time than usual near the unused chimney in our living room," Fox told Newsweek.

At first, she shrugged it off.

"I thought it was weird, but nothing alarming," Fox recalled.

But alarm bells rang when her six-year-old son reported a strange sound. "My son comes into my room and asks my husband and me, 'You guys don't hear that?'" Fox explained.

"That prompted me to go see what he was talking about, which is when I heard the clawing noise."

Remembering the cat's odd behavior, she decided to look in the fireplace and used her phone to investigate. "When I watched it back, to my surprise, there was a whole arm and mouth peeking through a gap," Fox said.

What she saw sent her into a tizzy: "I was hysterical. After screaming and alerting the whole house, my husband had to calm me down."

A calmer review of the video confirmed there was a squirrel in the chimney. Unfortunately, the animal was wedged between a pipe and the wall.

The family hired a specialized animal catcher, but their only solution was to cut the squirrel into pieces.

The family didn't want that, so they decided to wait for the squirrel to find its way out. Fox reports that her children would talk to the squirrel.

"Eventually, the scratching stopped, so I'm assuming he found his way back out, hopefully," Fox said.
