Nablus, Palestine - Israeli forces shot dead a 14-year-old boy during an Israeli military raid in the West Bank, officials in the occupied Palestinian territory said on Sunday.

A teenager was killed in the Askar refugee camp near the Palestinian city of Nablus, the Health Ministry in Ramallah said. An Israeli military spokesperson said the reports were being examined. 

The Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance service said one of its teams had treated a teenager who had been shot in the chest by Israeli soldiers in Askar and taken him to hospital, where attempts to save his life were unsuccessful. 

People gathered to mourn the boy, identified by media outlets as Islam Ajouri, after he was declared dead.

Violence in the West Bank has spiraled since Israel launched its all-out assault on Gaza in October 2023.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, more than 1,100 Palestinians have since been killed in the West Bank during Israeli military raids and armed attacks. Attacks by radical Israeli settlers on local Palestinians have increased sharply. 

Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem, among other territories, in the Six-Day War in 1967.  More than 700,000 Israelis have since settled there.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank are considered illegal under international law. In July 2024, the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion stating that Israel's decades-long occupation of the Palestinian territories is illegal and needs to end "as rapidly as possible."
