In a recent opinion essay, Ross Hemminger, president of the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR), argued his stance.

He said that while the group has "grounded its advocacy in constitutional principles [like] equal protection, limited government, and individual freedom," the trans issue has taken a turn they can no longer get behind.

"In 2015, the Log Cabin Republicans Board of Directors voted to add the 'T' under the umbrella of our mission – out of a belief that all adults should be allowed to pursue their own happiness, free of government interference, as long as it did not impede on the inalienable rights of others," Hemminger wrote.

"At the time, we did not believe that we would find ourselves where we are today. The transgender movement has ceased focusing on adults at all – nearly all of their efforts and those of their aligned special interest groups focus on minors."

Hemminger went on to parrot claims pushed by President Donald Trump, such as arguing that "they" are forcing schools to teach "radical gender ideology" and are pushing for "biological men in women's sports."

He continued, saying, "That is why, after significant discussion with our membership, our Board of Directors voted to refine Log Cabin Republicans' national advocacy focus to concentrate specifically on issues of sexual orientation and conservative values."

The Log Cabin Republicans' ties to the Trump administration

The LCR is the largest nonprofit LGBTQ+ conservative group in the country, which has enthusiastically supported President Trump in both of his terms.

The group has deep ties with First Lady Melania Trump, who held two closed-door fundraising events for her husband's presidential campaign alongside the group in 2024. Donald Trump notably didn't bother to show up to either event.

Their decision to no longer support the trans community brings them more in line with President Trump, who has sought to legislate against transgenderism in his second term.
