Zelensky bashes calls for Ukraine to replace him as president while Trump touts apparent "energy ceasefire"

Washington DC - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday his country could hold elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day total ceasefire, pushing back against President Donald Trump's call for Ukraine to pick a new leader. But Trump claimed Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an "energy ceasefire."

"First of all, with all respect to President Trump, it's up to our society, up to our people to choose one or another leader," Zelensky told ABC News in a televised interview, a day after Trump said Ukraine needed a new president who would agree to end the war.

Zelensky said he told Trump's team that if they really wanted Ukraine to hold elections, "please tell Putin give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organize elections."

Trump's move to temporarily waive Russian oil sanctions has sparked backlash not only from Ukraine, but also from many US allies in Europe, and even from some in his own Republican Party.

Then, Trump on Sunday claimed both Russia and Ukraine agreed to an "energy ceasefire."

"Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" he wrote on his Truth Social network, without further details.

Zelensky told Axios Trump's energy ceasefire announcement was "news for me."

Prior to Trump's post, Zelensky noted the necessity of continued US support and said he hoped the latest dispute would not hurt the "unity" among Ukraine's allies.

"To stop Putin – and I think this is the main goal, to stop him, this is the main deal, to stop this war ... we count on American support," he told ABC News.

He also reiterated that Ukraine was ready for a ceasefire, including just on energy infrastructure, if Russia agreed.

Russia's heavy attacks this week showed it does not "feel real pressure" to end the war, he said.

Trump on Saturday said Zelensky could have reached a deal with Russia to end the war many times and "chooses not to."

"I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal," Trump said to reporters on Saturday. "I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new president."
