Kyiv, Ukraine - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to meet President Donald Trump in New York in the coming days as efforts intensify to revive negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

Zelensky said he had spoken to Trump by phone and discussed a range of issues ahead of the meeting, which is expected to take place while both leaders attend the United Nations General Assembly.

A meeting in New York "could achieve a lot," Zelensky wrote on Telegram on Sunday, pointing to the possibility of renewed negotiations to end the war.

"The diplomatic momentum is there," Zelensky said. He did not give a date for the meeting.

Zelensky met US chief negotiator Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner earlier this month when they traveled to Kyiv.

It was the pair's first visit to Ukraine in their role as mediators in the conflict. They had previously made several trips to Russia, which launched its invasion of Ukraine more than four and a half years ago.

Plans are under way to revive direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow under US mediation, with Russia saying talks could resume in October.

Negotiations reached an impasse last winter and were subsequently suspended during the Iran war. Witkoff and Kushner, who were also involved in mediation efforts in the Middle East, are now making a fresh push to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

"There are ideas for de-escalation steps and fundamental security issues – energy, food, protecting people's lives. We are working together with the American team and are ready to take really serious steps," Zelensky wrote on Telegram.

The Ukrainian leader did not provide further details.

Zelensky has called on the US to provide additional air defense missiles to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian ballistic missile attacks.

Russia and Ukraine have frequently accused each other of lacking genuine interest in ending the fighting. Ukraine, backed by Western military aid, is also seeking to regain territory occupied by Russian forces.
