Toronto, Canada - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney threw his support behind the International Criminal Court (ICC) amid ongoing attacks against it by the Trump administration.
"Canada is a proud member of the International Criminal Court. We support it with funding. We support it with personnel. We support it with our values. We support it with our actions, and we will continue to do so," Carney told reporters during a press conference in Toronto on Wednesday.
His comments came in response to a question querying whether his government is doing enough to defend the ICC amid increasing attacks and threats from President Donald Trump's administration.
"It provides an essential service in a world that is more dangerous, more divided. In fact, in many respects, its responsibilities are ever greater," he said. "Our support for the ICC is unequivocal."
The Trump administration has repeatedly indicated that it wants to pull out of the ICC, and last year slapped sanctions on key officials in response to its issuing of arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In response to the sanctions – leveled against numerous ICC judges and prosecutors – the court declared: "Our independence and impartiality are our Pole Stars and remain unaffected."
More recently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowed to "dismantle" the ICC because, he alleges, it has been "waging a war" against the US.
He called the court an "unaccountable arbiter of a new global law" run by a powerful elite in "far-away places" that is empowered to arrest people and "threaten American sovereignty."
"As we speak, the ICC and its friends are waging a war against our country," Rubio said in a video posted to X. "Not with bullets of missiles, but with statutes, compacts, and the force of so-called 'international law.'"
