Victoria, Canada - General Jennie Carignan, Canada's top soldier, expressed solidarity with the two service members singled out by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a bigoted social media post.

During a conference of chiefs of the defense staff in Victoria, Carignan was asked about a post to X by Hegseth which singled out a cadet receiving an award from her instructor alongside the caption "this is real."

The post was a continuation of Hegseth's aggressive condemnation of minorities, women, and others in the military. He has repeatedly fat-shamed service members and even senior generals, and promised pardons for "not fat" West Point cadets in May.

Carignan expressed solidarity with the two service members Hegseth had attacked, saying they are receiving support from the Canadian military and will be allowed to choose how to respond if they want to do so.

"We have personnel affected by various events. We are consulting with them on how they want to go about doing this," Carignan said, per CBC News.

"We are very much focused in supporting the affected members, and I have a lot of pride in what our Canadian Armed Forces do and who we are, what we are about."

She revealed that she has yet to address the matter with her US counterparts, and has not yet sought an apology over the incident.

"We have professional competent personnel," Carignan said. "Reinforcing this aspect, my US counterparts are absolutely well versed in understanding how much of a contribution we are making."

The picture shared seems to have been taken from an Instagram post by the Vernon Cadets, celebrating a series of awards.

When approached for comment, the Pentagon expressed no remorse, with Deputy Press Secretary Jacob Bliss simply stating: "The X post speaks for itself."
