Ottawa, Canada - A senior member of Canada's Conservative opposition party has demanded that Prime Minister Mark Carney release "the full details" of the US trade deal it rejected on Friday.

While Shuvaloy Majumdar, Conservative MP for Calgary Heritage, wrote in a letter to Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc that "the government has the support of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition," that support was hinged on one clear demand.

"Conservatives also agree that Canada cannot accept a bad deal," he said, before pointing out that the collapse of negotiations last week "will have serious consequences for our economy."

"That is why I am requesting that your government release the full details of the proposed deal from which you chose to walk away on Friday evening," Majumdar wrote.

"The US administration has seen it. Your government has seen it. Canadians deserve to see it."

The member of parliament, who also serves as the shadow minister for Canada-US relations, touted the move as allowing Canadians "to debate and discuss the way forward as a country."

His letter to LeBlanc comes days after Carney's government stepped away from a trade deal with the US which it said was unfair.

As a result, the US followed through on its promise to impose 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods. Having walked away from the "bad deal," Ottawa responded with its own assortment of tariffs, notably on US steel and dairy.

"The United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal," Carney said of the deal. "We cannot accept what they've offered."

"Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!" Trump wrote on social media in response. "They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!"
