Thunder Bay, Canada - Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed recent comments by members of President Donald Trump's administration and slammed the US leader's huge "miscalculation" on Canada.

"Two weeks ago, we made the right decision to suspend our trade negotiations with the United States," Carney said during a speech from Thunder Bay, Ontario. "We couldn't accept what they'd offered, we wouldn't give what they'd asked."

"As a result, the US has imposed new tariffs designed to hurt and divide us," he continued. "Now, that's a miscalculation because Canadians will always take care of each other."

"It's a miscalculation because we have everything we need to build the country we want. We have the reserves, we have the resilience, and we have the right plan."

In response to questions from reporters, Carney went into the weeds of why certain aspects of the deal were not good enough, causing Ottawa to abandon negotiations two weeks ago.

"There are a few issues that the United States was arguing up to the last hour: Red lines, we're not going to change, boom it's in there. You know, our way or the highway, take it or leave it. You know, attitude. Now they're not," he explained.

"So all of a sudden they don't care about Canadian language or culture and those elements. Well if they didn't care they shouldn't have kept them in the deal."

Notably, he took aim at a number of Trump cabinet members who have said disparaging things about Carney's government in the weeks since the deal fell apart.

"I don't think, with all respect, appointed, unelected cabinet members in the United States are experts on Canadian politics," Carney declared.

"It's a war that is perpetuated by Canada," Texas Republican August Pfluger told CBC News this week. "The Canadians need to get reasonable. They've taken advantage of the United States for a long time."
