Trump-backed Michigan gubernatorial candidate slams Canada trade war: "Stop acting like children!"

Washington DC - When asked about President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada, MAGA Congressman John James demanded Washington negotiate and "stop acting like children."

Despite receiving the public backing from Trump in the Michigan gubernatorial race, James used an appearance on CBS News' Face the Nation program to criticize Washington's treatment of Canada over recent weeks.

When asked by CBS News' Margaret Brennan what he thought about the ongoing trade war with Canada, James pointed to the US-Canada relationship as "crucial."

"We need the negotiators to go back to the table," James said. "Stop acting like children, and negotiate a fair, mutually beneficial, reciprocal deal that will benefit the United States of America and the state of Michigan."

His comments came amid an escalating trade conflict between the US and Canada, which has seen Trump slap 50% tariffs on numerous Canadian products after Prime Minister Mark Carney refused to sign a trade deal in August.

Promising to "match the new US tariffs dollar for dollar," Carney and key members of his government unveiled a selection of wide-ranging retaliatory levies.

"In recent days, the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits for Canada," Carney said after the trade deal crashed and burned. "They asked too much, and they offered too little."

Trump has continued to escalate his attacks on Canada, officially renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America last week.

James went on to take a swipe at Carney, telling Brennan: "He should not be bullying Michigan because the negotiators can't come to a deal. We need to stop the bickering."

"These are adults," James said when Brennan pointed out Trump's role in the tariff war. "The negotiators need to get back in the room and negotiate, and not leave until they have a deal."
