Mexico City, Mexico - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday criticized elements within President Donald Trump's administration that she says are trying to "create divisions" in her government.

Sheinbaum's comments came after she was asked about DEA Administrator Terry Cole, who last week accused Mexican politicians of "corruption" and claimed that high-level officials within her government are "working directly with the cartels."

"The communication is fluid," Cole had said, referring to his communications with Security Minister Omar García Harfuch. "We are exchanging information not only on Mexican targets… but also, we are supporting operations in Mexico."

Asked about whether Cole was offering a form of endorsement for Harfuch to be the next president of Mexico, Sheinbaum hit back angrily at the Trump administration.

"They seek in one way or another to weaken governments, because that's one their objectives," Sheinbaum said during her daily press conference on Wednesday, referring to US officials.

According to Sheinbaum, Washington seeks to weaken "independent governments that defend sovereignty" and "divide us internally."

Despite her criticisms being clearly directed at recent actions by the current US administration, Sheinbaum made a point to clarify that such "strategies" have long been used by successive regimes in Washington.

"They are tactics of interference that they use," Sheinbaum said. "What happens is that they run into a wall because the Security Cabinet of the government of Mexico is highly coordinated and very united."

"They think that by speaking well about one person and ill of others they’re going to create divisions" within the Mexican government, she pointed out. "But they fail."

"They remember they have elections in November. So they often use Mexico as part of their election… What they seek, also, is to influence our elections. It's the same old story," Sheinbaum said.
