Sheinbaum warns that the MAGA right wants to change the government in Mexico
Mexico City, Mexico - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum used a press conference this week to warn about "right-wing" groups within the Trump administration that are trying to change the government in Mexico.
"There are very right-wing groups in that Government that do not want Mexico and do not want the people and seek for the government in Mexico to change," Sheinbaum claimed in Spanish during her morning press conference on Monday.
Her comment came in response to a question on whether she is concerned that President Donald Trump will use his position to influence upcoming elections in Mexico.
While she didn't directly blame Trump, her comment about "that Government" made it clear she was pointing at right-wing groups within his government.
Sheinbaum said she assumes the Trump administration "do want to interfere" and the "only defense" against such behavior is to extend the external pressure of the "people."
She described the American far-right as an "ideology against the people" which prioritizes the economic interests of the rich and powerful and exerts "supremacy of some over others."
Strikingly, she accused groups of promoting policies that have created poverty and inequality and have fueled political "violence" and "authoritarianism" north of the border.
Her comments came amid escalating tension between the US and Mexico, and as troops on both sides were sent to the border for dramatic "mirror operations."
Sheinbaum, who just celebrated the beginning of her third year in office, has tried to walk a delicate line between keeping Trump happy on trade while defending her country against his various threats against Mexican sovereignty.
"I think it's part of the election campaign in the United States," Sheinbaum said in September in response to shocking comments made by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"They shouldn't use Mexico in their campaign. The United States has its [own] problems."
