According to the Houston Chronicle, the 51-year-old Academy Award winner told the Crime Stoppers of Houston's The Balanced Voice podcast that a gubernatorial campaign is "a true consideration."

The incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott is running for a third term in November 2022. He is currently facing a slew of controversies over the massive power outages that rocked Texas as well as his retraction of the mask mandate.

McConaughey would likely welcome the chance to switch up his life course. In his 2020 memoir Greenlights, he details the obstacles he faced in order to enter a career in Hollywood, saying that he enjoys setting himself new challenges.
