Could Matthew McConaughey be Texas' next governor?

Austin, Texas – All right, all right, all right! Matthew McConaughey is apparently considering a run for Texas governor.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the 51-year-old Academy Award winner told the Crime Stoppers of Houston's The Balanced Voice podcast that a gubernatorial campaign is "a true consideration."

The incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott is running for a third term in November 2022. He is currently facing a slew of controversies over the massive power outages that rocked Texas as well as his retraction of the mask mandate.

The True Detective star has no political experience but wants to use his influence for good: "I'm looking into now again, what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What's my category in my next chapter of life that I'm going into?"

McConaughey would likely welcome the chance to switch up his life course. In his 2020 memoir Greenlights, he details the obstacles he faced in order to enter a career in Hollywood, saying that he enjoys setting himself new challenges.

The memoir's title references the life decisions that lead to progress.

It is not yet clear if McConaughey would run as a Republican, a Democrat, or an independent, though he has often spoken out about the need to compromise and meet in the middle.
