Elon Musk was born in South Africa in 1971, the son of the wealthy owner of an emerald mine. As a teen, he emigrated to Canada with his brother, but he always had his eye on the US as a final destination. Eventually, he ended up at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with degrees in economics and physics.

By then, Musk has already tasted success with his first business venture, a web software company that sold for over $300 million in 1999, just four years after he and his brother started it. An even bigger paycheck was to follow after a merger led to him being one of the co-founders of PayPal.

In June 2002, Musk created the space travel and manufacturing company SpaceX, a commercial venture aiming to bring people to Mars. Aside from being chief engineer at SpaceX, he is also the CEO and product architect of electric car maker Tesla. Musk invested in the company back in the spring of 2004 and has seen its value explode ever since.
