André and English, who are both Black, say that officers racially profiled and illegally stopped them in separate incidents at the airport.

Per The Washington Post, André described an incident in April 2021 in which he was stopped by two plainclothes police officers asking if he was carrying drugs. The 39-year-old said no, but they continued to question him anyway.

"There's all these people having to squeeze past us on this narrow, awkward jet bridge as I look like this suspicious perpetrator," André said of the encounter. He said he was the only person of color on the jet bridge at the time.

The Eric André Show star described the experience as "demoralizing, dehumanizing, racist, and traumatic."

English detailed a similar experience, which occurred in October 2020. The 40-year-old was also approached by two plainclothes officers who asked whether he was carrying illegal drugs. The officers then searched his belongings.

"I felt completely powerless, I felt violated, I felt cornered, I felt like I couldn't … continue to get on the plane — I felt like I had to comply if I wanted everything to go smoothly," English said.

While the police department believes these searches are consensual, the lawsuit argues that the officers coerce passengers and that people of color are disproportionately targeted.

The comedians seek to have the jet bridge search practices declared unconstitutional.

After André tweeted about his experience with racial profiling in April 2021, English reached out to him.

"I think we're here because a lot of people have probably had this happen to them and feel like… they just have to let things happen to them," English said on Tuesday. "I think we're here to speak up for those people."

"I have the resources to bring national attention and international attention to this incident. It's not an isolated incident," André said, per The Associated Press.

"If Black people don’t speak up for each other, who will?" he added.
