In the '90s, his best friend died of a drug overdose. Years later, Keanu and his then-girlfriend had a child, who was stillborn. The loss weighed on the couple, and his girlfriend died in a car accident while intoxicated two years later. His sister battled leukemia for many years, causing him to donate and raise millions for cancer charities.

The Canadian's "dark days" have contributed to him giving back, according to the source, and he is known for being down-to-earth and generous at work, too.

In one instance, he is said to have given a $20,000 bonus to a Matrix set designer after learning he was in financial trouble.

He also gifted a Harley-Davidson to each of the 12 stuntmen he worked with on The Matrix Reloaded, and gave John Wick 4's stuntmen Rolex Submariner watches with personal inscriptions.

It's no wonder, then, that many in Hollywood are eager to work with Keanu - and not just because of his generous gifts.

"He takes them so seriously and credits them with helping contribute to his success," said a production crew member. "These people rarely get that."
