Matthew McConaughey reacts to Texas school shooting: "We are failing"

Uvalde, Texas - Matthew McConaughey released an emotional statement following Tuesday's deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers.

"As you all are aware there was another mass shooting today, this time in my hometown of Uvalde, Texas," the actor began.

The Texas native penned an impassioned plea following the horrific shooting, which he shared across his social media platforms.

"Once again, we have tragically proven that we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us.

"The true call to action now is for every American to take a longer and deeper look in the mirror, and ask ourselves, 'What is it that we truly value?'" The Wolf of Wall Street star wrote.

"How do we repair the problem? What small sacrifices can we individually take today, to preserve a healthier and safer nation, state, and neighborhood tomorrow?

"We cannot exhale once again, make excuses, and accept these tragic realities as the status quo."

McConaughey lived in Uvalde until he was 11-years-old, before moving with his family to Longview.

The 52-year-old also called on all American mothers and fathers to "re-evaluate, and renegotiate our wants from our needs."

He then urged Americans to find "common ground above this devastating American reality that has tragically become our children's issue."

"We must do better. Action must be taken so that no parent has to experience what the parents in Uvalde and the others before them have endured," McConaughey added.

The actor has spoken out in the past in support of stricter gun laws.

Tuesday's shooting by an 18-year-old gunman is the deadliest school shooting in Texas history. President Joe Biden also released a statement condemning the tragedy and demanding action from lawmakers.
