Per Julien's Auctions, Steve Jobs wore the brown suede sandals in the 1970s and 1980s during "many pivotal moments in Apple's history."

Before they headed to the auction, the shoes were part of Mark Sheff's collection. Sheff managed Jobs' estate in Albany, California, in the '80s.

The well-worn foot wear was sold on Sunday as part of the Icons and Idols: Rock 'N' Roll auction, which took place at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City and online.

The winning bidder won the shoes for $218,750. The lucky person was in the room, but they didn't want their name disclosed, Julien's Auctions Executive Director Martin Nolan told NPR. In addition to the footwear, the sale also included an NFT of images of the Birkenstocks.

Nolan told NPR that it is the highest price ever paid for a pair of sandals at an auction.

The Birkenstocks aren't the first of Jobs' possessions to be auctioned off for a hefty sum. In August, an Apple-1 Computer prototype from the '70s fetched $677,197 in Boston.

When Nolan was asked if the sandals that show "heavy wear" have a smell, he reportedly said that they "do smell ... of success." The only question is: does success stink?
