Japanese pro gamer sacked for horrific trash-talking slip-up

Osaka, Japan - Trash talk in gaming is an unpleasant staple of what some people call a hobby and others call a job. But one player made headlines by going a bit too far with a term that's dangerously ambiguous.

Japanese pro Tekken player Tanukana, who used to play on the Cyclops Athlete Gaming Esports team, was fired for trash-talking short men on a livestream.

Tanukana seems to have had a lapse of judgement and used a slang term in gaming that talks about necessary items or gear all players should have in a video game, "jinken (人権)," – the problem is that also translates as "human rights".

In English, her quip sounds admittedly horrific: "Men who are under 170 cm [5 feet 7] don’t have human rights."

She also suggested they look into bone-lengthening surgery.

As Kotaku reported, Tanukana even noted in a since-deleted tweet that she was aware her little diss might get her into serious trouble, as she had been warned it constituted hate speech.

She acknowledged the slip-up, and followed up with a more formal apology, as is traditional in Japan.

However, that was not enough for her team or their sponsor, Red Bull, and Tanukana was let go.

Since then, the player has taken many of her social media offline, including her Instagram profile and YouTube channel.

Tanuka's apology on Twitter said: "I am very sorry to all the fans who support me on a daily basis, to all the sponsors such as Red Bull, and to my selfish remarks, which caused unpleasant feelings and a great deal of inconvenience."
