London, UK - The makers of Downton Abbey have announced an early Christmas present for fans of the cult TV show about British aristocracy.

A sequel to the 2019 Downton Abbey film is set to hit the big screen in December, producers announced on Twitter on Monday, confirming that the entire original cast would return for Downton Abbey 2.

Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West are meanwhile set to join as new cast members.

The story is based on the hit British series about the Crawley family and their servants at the beginning of the 20th century.

The award-winning show, based on scripts by Julian Fellowes, starred Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, and Dame Maggie Smith, among others.

The first film version was directed by US director Michael Engler in 2019. British director Simon Curtis, who previously worked on My Week with Marilyn and Woman in Gold is now on board for the sequel to the historical drama.
