Oculus headset falls victim to Meta's awkward rebranding

Menlo Park, California - Facebook's big rebrand will spell the end of the Oculus headset, as the company pivots hard towards its Metaverse concept.

No more household names here, says Facebook/Meta, as it leans into trying to get you into the Metaverse.

On October 28, Meta's VP of virtual reality and augmented reality announced broke the big news about Facebook's name change in a Facebook post that included an easily missed nugget of information, spotted by PCGamer.

"Starting in early 2022, you’ll start to see the shift from Oculus Quest from Facebook to Meta Quest and Oculus App to Meta Quest App over time," the post said.

For now, you can still get to oculus.com to check out the VR headsets, and even though "Meta" is now plastered all over the site, the product page still talks about the Oculus Quest.

The changes started picking up pace on November 21 and the branding is likely to get more confusing as the full switch to Meta continues.

Ultimately, this means that all those efforts to make Oculus synonymous with Virtual Reality are going out the window, to be replaced by Meta's shiny new buzzword: the Metaverse.

The full changes won't be complete until 2022, so until then, hang on to your sanity as you try to navigate different names for the same VR headset.
