From romance to fantasy, BookTok has recommendations for all genres, but there's no better time to branch out into the dark landscape of horror fiction.

Thankfully, the reading community on TikTok has plenty of horror favorites that are well worth your time.

But be warned, they just may have you sleeping with the lights on long after you finish them.

Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica

Tender is the Flesh is a BookTok favorite in the horror genre, but this one isn't for the faint of heart.

The novel takes place in a dystopian future after a virus has made animal meat poisonous to humans. In its place, "special meat" – human meat – has taken over.

Tender is the Flesh's protagonist, Marcos, works at a meat processing plant and wrestles with internal conflict surrounding the morality of his job.

If you're able to bare the disturbing subject matter, this horror pick is worth the hype.

Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay

Paul Tremblay's The Cabin at the End of the World is an eerie tale that Stephen King praised as "thought-provoking and terrifying."

A seemingly relaxing family trip to a secluded New Hampshire cabin turns sinister when three strangers arrive at the cabin and approach the couple's young daughter.

One of the strangers comes baring an ominous message – he needs their help saving the world.

The Cabin at the End of the World is the kind of book where it's better to go in knowing as little as possible, so we'll leave it at that.

Be sure to read it before the film adaptation, M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin, is released in February 2023!

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Gracia

A true Gothic horror novel, Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic is about a young woman who travels to High Place, the eerie home of her cousin, who claims her husband is attempting to kill her.

As she digs deeper, our protagonist begins to discover some disturbing secrets lying inside the sprawling home.

In the vein of Daphne du Maurier's iconic novel Rebecca, this book is the perfect fall read with an atmosphere that will have you hooked from the very first page.

Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

Riley Sager is a powerhouse author in the horror genre, but Home Before Dark is the best pick for the perfect Halloween read.

Drawing parallels to The Amityville Horror, the story follows Maggie, who once lived in a Victorian home where she and her family had frightening encounters with the paranormal.

Maggie doesn't remember – or believe – the descriptions of the hauntings that her father describes of their time in the home, which he chronicled in a best-selling book.

In this chilling read, Maggie begins to wonder if the paranormal experiences were indeed real as she uncovers dark secrets about the haunted home.

Now go get reading before spooky season is over!
