There's no better way to welcome the illusive and allergy-provoking Spring weather deep in the heart of Texas than with some kite-flying action.

On Sunday, the ABC Kite Fest will return to Zilker Park. The best part? It's totally free and both family and pet-friendly!

Avid kite-fliers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages are invited to the centrally located park from 10 AM to 5 PM CST to witness thousands of colorful kites take over the Austin skyline.

This year's festival will also see the return of the community kite contest, which features several categories – some for kids only, and some for all ages – such as steadiest kite, most unusual lite, youngest and oldest kite-fliers, and best kite-flier.

Registration will begin at 11 AM on Sunday, and the contest itself will run from 1 to 4 PM.

But kite-flying isn't the only thing to do at the Kite Fest.

Live music, local bites, and dog-friendly activities

There will also be a children's concert from 10 AM to 1 PM honoring the life of Moss Pieratt. The show is set to feature a variety of family-friendly music artists like the Barton Hills Choir, Mr. Will, Tiarra Girls, and The Magnolia Kids.

Those who want to bring their fur babies to take in the sights and sounds of ABC's Kite Fest are also in for quite the treat!

Thanks to Austin Subaru, H-E-B, and Tomlinson's Feed, this year's festival will include an off-leash pet playground pop-up with dog-friendly activities, including a three-ring jump and a tunnel run.

Keeping things local per usual, the ABC Kite Fest will also have a food court where festival goers can chow down on scrumptious bites from various local hot spots such as Amy's Ice Creams and RosieJo.

Barton Springs Road will be closed from 7 AM to 7 PM on Sunday, and a limited number of paid parking spots are available through the festival's website.

Advice from a local: find free parking away from the madness and trek it to the park on-foot for a day of kite-flying magic.
