LeBarn James' gym: Mississippi man builds homemade gym on his farm

Batesville, Mississippi – Will Hartzell, who goes by LeBarn James on social media, has taken his Covid gym game to the next level, building a homemade wooden gym from scratch on his farm.

If there's one thing that Covid-19 lockdowns taught people, it's that you can make a gym out of anything. Will Hartzell took things up a level, though, when he built a from-scratch gym from scratch on his Mississippi farm.

From a treadmill made out of wood and conveyor rollers, to a leg press using cinder blocks as weights, the Batesville, Mississippi native crafted weight-lifting equipment for every muscle group - and they're all on his farm.

Known by many on TikTok as "LeBarn James," Hartzell told BuzzFeed News that building his wooden jungle gym was a lifelong dream.

LeBarn James' gym just the next project in a long-term hobby

While some believe LeBarn James' gym was built for the social media clout - after all, Hartzell has 2.6 million TikTok followers - Hartzell was adamant that building things has been a hobby of his since he was three years old.

That being said, if it wasn't for a year in lockdown, the basketball fanatic likely wouldn't have conceptualized, nor had the time to build his dream gym.

With all the basketball gyms closed in Mississippi throughout most of 2020, LeBarn James' home gym idea took flight. It was a golden opportunity, and he took it.

LeBarn James' homemade gym was anything but basic

What he created is jaw-droppingly brilliant. He made dumbbells by pouring cement into different sizes of planting pots to create different weight sets, and crafted a makeshift elliptical and treadmill with just wood, bolts, nails, and conveyor rollers to mimic a treadmill.

LeBarn James got even more creative when it came to setting up a makeshift basketball court. Rather than buying a basketball hoop from an online retailer to get it delivered, he drilled an old hoop onto the side of a shed on the farm.

To replicate the different distance markers that are usually on the court, like the free-throw line and the three-pointer arc, Hartzell put up string barricades from similar distances.

TikTok fame enters the frame due to LeBarn James' gym game

The aspiring athlete posts videos on TikTok of his workouts, practice games, and behind-the-scenes footage of his one-of-a-kind gym.

Even when he's not beefing up or balling out at the farm, Hartzell opts for work boots over fancy basketball shoes, and it doesn't appear to affect his game one bit. He clearly just wants to do things his own way.
