Trump cancels controversial January 6 press conference

Palm Beach, Florida – Ex-president Donald Trump is ditching plans to hold a press conference on the one-year anniversary of the January 6 Capitol riot.

Trump originally scheduled the news conference at Mar-a-Lago to occur at the same time as a prayer service at the Capitol, likely as an attempt to detract from commemoration events.

Trump cast the blame on others for the cancelation, turning his ire toward the House select committee currently investigating the events of January 6.

"In light of the total bias and dishonesty of the January 6th Unselect Committee of Democrats, two failed Republicans, and the Fake News Media, I am canceling the January 6th Press Conference at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday, and instead will discuss many of those important topics at my rally on Saturday, January 15th, in Arizona – It will be a big crowd!" the ex-president said in a statement.

During the conference, Trump was expected to criticize the House select committee and also repeat false claims that he won the 2020 presidential election.

He has been accused of inciting the violence that occurred at the Capitol on January 6 and investigators have not ruled out the possibility of issuing him with a subpoena. The 75-year-old has repeatedly tried to block the release of documents requested by the House committee.

Though many Republicans expressed support for Trump's news conference, others were wary of doing so, perhaps thinking it might be too politically risky.

The same reason may have been the true cause for the cancelation, as Trump is reportedly mulling a 2024 presidential bid.
