Marjorie Taylor Greene tries to laugh off Gazpacho Police mess-up

Washington DC - Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) tried to laugh off her mix-up of the Nazi secret police with a chilled Spanish soup, yet most on the internet are laughing – or shaking their heads – at her.

The right-wing firebrand poked fun of her mistaken comments made during an interview on Wednesday with One American Network (OAN), in which she complained House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was secretly investigating members of Congress and constituents.

"Not only do we have the DC jail, which is the DC gulag," said Rep. Greene in a now-viral video. "Now we have Nancy Pelosi’s gazpacho police spying on members of Congress, spying on the legislative work that we do, spying on our staff and spying on American citizens that want to come to talk with their representatives."

After being roundly mocked for confusing the Gestapo, the official secret police of Nazi Germany with gazpacho, a cold tomato soup often served with cucumbers and cilantro, Greene's misstep spread like wildfire on social media by Thursday morning.

"No soup for those who illegally spy on Members of Congress, but they will be thrown in the goulash. #Gazpacho#Gestapo," Greene tweeted in jest. She followed up with a cartoon saying she had been "marked safe from the Gazpacho police."

But the damage was done. Besides setting off countless Gazpacho Police memes, fellow Congress members fired back.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), leader of the progressive Squad in Congress, said the screw-up shows Greene, who also favors banning books that expose racial injustice, needs to go back to school.

"She clearly banned all books from her house years ago," AOC tweeted.

Rep. Grace Meng (D-N.Y.) was more pointed with her reaction after watching the video: "To every little girl out there: don’t ever think you’re not smart enough to run for office," she wrote.

This is far from Greene's first flawed reference, and not her first comparing American politics to Nazis and the Holocaust.

Last year, the conservative agitator was forced to apologize for affronting people with comments comparing the required wearing of Covid-19 safety masks in the House to the horrors of the Holocaust. She later again compared the Biden's administration's encouragement to get vaccinated to Nazi tactics.

Greene's personal account has been permanently banned from Twitter for repeatedly spreading misinformation about Covid. She has also made comments openly supporting QAnon conspiracy theories and transphobia.
