Republican "shadow committee" releases counter-report as January 6 Committee's report looms

Washington DC - A Republican-led "shadow committee" has released a counter-report as the House committee that investigated the January 6 attack on the US Capitol prepares to release its final report to the public.

The report focused mainly on what it proposed to be security failures that took place on January 6 as a massive group of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The January 6 Committee had been investigating Donald Trump's involvement with the riots and ultimately urged the Justice Department to seek criminal charges against the former president. Yet, the shadow committee's report attempted to shift the blame on Democratic leaders.

In the report, the committee argued that these failures left the complex "vulnerable," and stated that the January 6 Committee "disregarded those institutional failings that exposed the Capitol to violence that day."

It also alleges that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her office gave orders to security to change protocols leading up to the attack, which were kept secret from Republicans.

The Shadow Committee consists of Republican House members Jim Banks of Indiana, Rodney Davis of Illinois, Jim Jordan of Ohio, Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota, and Troy Nehls of Texas.

According to The Hill, the five members were chosen by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to sit on the January 6 Commission, but after Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected the appointment of Banks and Jordan, McCarthy pulled all of his picks.

The January 6 Committee is expected to make the final report of their investigation public on Thursday after pushing back the release one day.
