South Bend, Indiana - After two successful decades as Notre Dame's basketball head coach, Mike Brey is set to retire concluding the 2022-23 season.

Brey's time with Notre Dame will go down in history, as the program announced his departure at the end of the season.

"It has been a great run for me and our program over the past two decades, but it is time for a new voice to lead this group into the future," Brey said in a statement released on Thursday.

Brey will leave the Fighting Irish as the school's most decorated coach.

"That Mike (Brey) is the winningest coach in the 119-year history of Notre Dame men’s basketball speaks to his skill as a teacher of the game," said University Vice President Jack Swarbrick. "His even greater legacy, however, lies in his achievements as an educator and mentor of the young men who played for him. "

In his 23 seasons with Notre Dame that began in 2000, Brey has marked an impressive record of 481-269, leading the program to the NCAA Tournament 13 times.

Of those tournament appearances, Brey's Irish team earned a pair of Elite 8 runs in 2015 and 2016, and a Sweet 16 appearance during the 2002-03 season.

So far embattled this year, Notre Dame is currently riding the struggle bus with a 9-10 overall record, and 1-7 ACC record.

While the Irish entered the season with high expectations for the NCAA tournament, the legendary coach and his players likely won't be awarded a final tournament seed – barring a miraculous turnaround after this midway point in the 2022-23 season.

Nonetheless, Brey's coaching career at Notre Dame will be one the program will highlight for years to come. If coaches were given team jerseys, Brey's number would surely be retired, too.
