The biggest college football rivalries of all time

New York, New York - College football rivalries are some of the biggest and oldest in US sports, with some duels dating back over a century.

In recent years, college football has undergone some major changes, with conference realignments highlighting the biggest shift in the sport.

Still, even with all this geographical rejigging coming to the gridiron, team rivalries still remain strong and in some cases have become even more entrenched.

From the Midwest's Big Ten Conference, to the Southern hospitality in the Southeastern conference, here are three of college football's biggest grudge matches.

The biggest college football rivalry, the one that garners the most viewers nationwide – this is the clash between two Big Ten conference powerhouses, Ohio State and Michigan.

It's enough to say "The Game" and most people will know what you're talking about. This rivalry has been firing up Midwesterners since 1897 and the intensity hasn’t waned one bit. In fact, last year's meeting earned the largest TV audience ever for a college football game: over 15 million viewers.

While Michigan leads the series 59-51-6, the Buckeyes have dominated the Wolverines since the winning eight of the last nine meetings consecutively - including the 42–28 win the year Ohio State became the first CFP national champions in 2014.

This Midwest rivalry defines the Big Ten and, of course, has one of the biggest impacts on the shape of the entire college football postseason.

Iron Bowl: Alabama v. Auburn

What makes this rivalry so great and sets it apart is that it's an intrastate affair.

In Alabama, the Super Bowl plays second fiddle to the Iron Bowl. For fans of Alabama and Auburn, it’s the only game that matters, and the two fan bases despise each other in a way outsiders may not understand.

The rivalry can turn toxic quite literally, as in 2010, when one Crimsons Tide fan poisoned the Tigers' iconic Toomer's Corner oak tree after his team won the Iron Bowl.

Alabama leads the series at 48-37-1 and holds the record for the longest-winning streak (9).

With the schools competing in the same SEC division, this game often has huge implications for conference title games, national title matchups, and of course, bragging rights in Alabama communities.

The Red River of the South separates Texas and Oklahoma, and it's a good thing too, because this rivalry is ready to spill over the border at all times.

When you come to the Cotton Bowl – better known as the Red River Showdown – for the Texas Longhorns v. Oklahoma Sooners matchup, you better choose a side and stick with it.

One of the more unique characteristics about the Bowl in Dallas is that both locker rooms empty into a common corridor, so both teams take the field through the same tunnel.

Texas leads 62-50-5, though Oklahoma has won six of the past seven meetings, and the last four in a row.

This iconic rivalry usually decides the Big 12 Conference outlook.
