The 14-year-old gelding ridden by Robin Godel tore a ligament in his right front leg when he landed in the final water combination, the Swiss Olympic governing body said on Sunday.

NBC Olympics reported that all event participants immediately stopped the race to allow Jet Set to be taken off the course to be treated.

According to equestrian federation FEI, "Sadly, ultrasound scans revealed an irreparable ligament rupture in the lower right limb, just above the hoof, and on humane grounds and with the agreement of the owners and athlete, the decision was taken to put the horse to sleep."

It is the first Olympic competition for the 22-year-old rider, who was uninjured.

Godel commented on the death of his faithful companion, saying that Jet Set "passed while doing what he loved most: galloping and jumping obstacles."

The Swiss team will be back in action on Monday despite the tragic accident. Substitute rider Eveline Bodenmüller will jump in with Violine de la Brasserie.
