Saitama, Japan - The US men’s basketball team is golden once again, defeating France in the gold medal game of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Team USA was victorious in Saturday’s gold medal game, beating France 87-82 to win their third-straight Olympic gold medal.

Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant (32), the all-time men's Olympic scorer, who was playing in his third Olympics had another monster game in his third career gold medal matchup, dropping a game-high 29 points over Team France.

This was also the third time he’s scored at least 29 points in a Team USA gold medal game.

Jayson Tatum, of the Boston Celtics, chipped in 19 points to help the US stave off Team France. Damian Lillard of the Blazers and Jrue Holiday, fresh off of the Bucks’ NBA Finals victory, each added 11 points.

This game was significant in that it was the French squad who won in the first matchup with the US during the preliminary round, also the first game either team played upon arriving in Tokyo. That shocking loss only fueled the US drive to gold and made it even sweeter that they could hand France a little payback in the process.

The United States was ahead through much of the game. They occasionally had trouble building a comfortable lead, but were able to keep it late in the game. Every time the US was pulling away, Team France was able to mount small comeback after small comeback, even closing the gap at as little as three points twice in the fourth quarter. Luckily, Team USA persevered.

France’s big man and the Utah Jazz’s reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert, was a force to be reckoned with inside the paint, scoring 16 points with eight rebounds, while NY Knicks guard Evan Fournier also scored 16 as France was left with the silver medal.

With this 20th Olympic men’s basketball tournament complete, Team USA has now won gold 16 times.
