WNBA Finals: Chicago on the brink of their first title after cooling off the Mercury in game three

Chicago, Illinois - The Chicago Sky hosted their first WNBA Finals game since 2014 as they blew out the Phoenix Mercury in game three on Friday night.

The Sky routed the Mercury in historic fashion, winning game three 86-50 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five championship series.

Chicago is now one win away from the franchise’s first-ever league crown.

Friday night’s 36-point win was the biggest margin of victory in WNBA Finals history and it came by way of a mixture of Phoenix’s bad shooting and Chicago’s stellar defense.

By halftime, Phoenix was shooting completely cold, piling up only 24 points by the break and overall, could score no more than 14 points in any quarter of the game.

Definitely not a recipe for success, especially when it leaves the Mercury one game from missing out on their fourth title in team history.

Chicago guard and first-time All-Star this season, Kahleah Copper (27) led the way for the Sky as each player on the team scored in the game.

In both wins so far, Copper has been her team’s leading scorer, as they now have control of the series with the hopes of hoisting the trophy on their home floor.

She also leads the team overall during the Finals in total scoring, giving her teammate Candace Parker a little more breathing room on the court.

Copper finished the night leading all scorers with 22 points off of 6-for-10 shooting from the field.

It seemed things couldn’t go any worse for the Mercury in game three, and the best player in their team's history vowed to not make the same mistakes again.

"We'll be better than 50. You can take that to Vegas," Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

But if the Sky do indeed win game four and clinch, hopefully, the Mercury would go out this time in an actual fight.

Game four of the WNBA Finals is on Sunday afternoon, back in Chicago.
