Young boxing talent dies after knockout at Junior World Championships

Kielce, Poland - Rashed Al-Swaisat, a promising boxing talent from Jordan, has died from traumatic brain injury following a knockout in the ring after ten days in hospital.

The young boxer was just 19 years old.

On April 16, he climbed into the ring in Kielce, Poland for a bout in the Junior World Championships light heavyweight division.

He lost the first two rounds during the fight against the Estonian Anton Vinogradov and was knocked out hard during the third. Doctors rushed in to treat him while he was still lying in the ring.

When they realized that his injuries were extremely serious, he was immediately taken to a hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery.

Al-Swaisat reportedly died at the hospital from traumatic brain injury on Monday.

The boxing world is now in mourning, with the world governing body AIBA already expressing its dismay in a statement. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates, to whom we extend our sincere condolences," it said.

The Jordanian Olympic Committee also speaks out

Supporters and friends of the sport reacted to the news on Twitter, some dismayed. "Very sad news indeed, thoughts and prayers are with his family, club and coaches and the boxing community worldwide," one user wrote.

The Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) also commented, confirming the death of the young amateur boxer.

"The Jordan Olympic Committee expresses its deep sadness and grief over the death of Rashed Al-Swaisat, who passed away last Monday night," it said.
