For several years during World War II, there were major metal shortages in the US, largely on account of the war effort. As a result, Oscar statuettes were made of bronze-lacquered and ebony-painted plaster. The unlucky winners of these lesser trophies were later invited to exchange them for the real deal when the shortage ended.
