San Diego, California - A freeway in San Diego turned into a surreal cornucopia of cash on Friday morning after an armored truck spilled its cargo in one of the worst places imaginable.

Videos posted on Instagram and TikTok captured the hilarious scenes, as drivers frolicked around with wads of cash, laughing and throwing dollar bills up in the air.

One clip, posted by TikToker Demi Bagby, shows traffic stopped and the road covered in money as far as the eye can see. "This is the most insane things I've ever seen! Someone dropped money all over the freeway, San Diego has shut down!" the fitness influencer says in disbelief, while other people scramble to gather as much of a haul as possible.

The whole incident seems to have started around 9 AM, when the back doors of the armored truck accidentally opened, sending the cash flying all over the freeway. The California Highway Patrol struggled to manage the chaos. "People stopped in the lanes, completely blocked the lanes, started picking up the cash," a CHP spokesperson told a CNN affiliate.

Although the atmosphere seemed to be light-hearted, judging by the social media videos, some of the fun ended up having serious consequences. The CHP spokesperson confirmed that at least two people were arrested and issued a pretty stern warning: "...if you have picked up any of the cash, I highly suggest you turn it in to the CHP office immediately because we do have a lot of evidence to follow up on."

The FBI is now also involved in the investigations.
